And not all the exchanges of words were hostile. Many from the ANC grassroots didn't know where they were going until they got off the bus, and they were very sympathetic to the settlers.

So instead, the party holds their rally, in the blistering heat, in front of one of the six standpipes in the settlement, driving their car right in front of the water pipe. Superintendent Glen Nayager orders the residents to leave. But where are they to go? They're already home.

Despite their attempts to hand out flags and other paraphernalia, the ANC remains in contempt within the settlements. The flags were torn, and thrown to the ground. One ANC aparatchik stuck ANC flags in people's shacks. They were torn up too.
