Anti-War Coalition
Thousands expected at massive Anti-War March on Saturday
The Anti-War Coalition expects a huge number of people to converge on Johannesburg this Saturday, 15 February, for an anti-war march. The march will begin at the Library Gardens (between Market and President streets) at 11:00. Short speeches by prominent religious people from all denominations as well as speakers from various social movements, political parties, women's organisations and environmental groups will be delivered.
We will then march a short distance to the American Consulate, Public Affairs Section, at 34 Pritchard St. where we will stop for a short protest before continuing on to Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown's Market Theatre Precinct. The march will culminate at Mary Fitzgerald Square with a rally featuring prominent cultural figures, including musicians, singers, poets and television actors.
The Anti-War Coalition has the full support of the Johannesburg Metropolitan police who together with 350 Anti-Coalition marshalls will ensure a peaceful protest. We will also provide water at a number of points along the route as well as at Mary Fitzgerald Square. First Aid crews and other emergency services will be on stand by. The march itself is relatively short -approximately 2 (two)kms.
We will march along the following route: From the Library Gardens on President Street via Rissik to Pritchard Street. After a short pause on Pritchard Street we will proceed to Jeppe via Sauer Street. The walk from Jeppe Street to the Market Theatre Precinct is downhill and not very long.
The Anti-War Coalition suggests that people park at the south side of Mary Fitzgerald Square and we will organize transportation to the Library Gardens.
